Bahias de Huatulco / La Crucecita

We made our way to Bahias de Huatulco for some beach time. We stayed at the smaller town of La Crucecita which is just a 15 minute walk to the ocean and feels a bit more authentic than Santa Cruz Huatulco. The area was developed with the idea that it would be more sustainable than some resorts in Mexico have been. The bays provide some natural break from the wave action and undertow on this part of the coast. map
We were told that air temperatures are more mild and the water visibility is better in winter.
Path to Bahia Organo (Take a taxi to the trailhead and walk 15 minutes. No services, bring your own water, food, shade, etc.)
There is a large hill beside La Crucecita with paved walking paths and picnic shelters. Unfortunately it has fallen into some disrepair but it is a nice place to go bird watching. (Use your good judgement about security and daylight.)

Oaxaca to Tehuantepec

We took the coach bus south east from Oaxaca to the small town of Tehuantepec. The bus ride on highway 190 down the mountains from Oaxaca city to the coast is quite winding and a bit steep. The coach drivers do an excellent job staying alert and keeping their passengers safe. (There is another route to the coast on highway 175 that is so winding it is only appropriate for the smaller minivans. We heard it can be a white knuckle trip.) We chose to take a break, overnight after an arduous bus ride, and to see the market in the morning.
Tehuantepec sits at a cross roads at the base of the Sierra Madre de Oaxaca range near the coast. The area is known for being a cultural center for the Zapotec. Here there is a historically a strong matriarchal culture, more than other parts of Mexico. The women often own their own businesses, many still wear traditional dress, and there is a high tolerance for transgenders.

Monte Albán Oaxaca

Only 15 minutes drive by mini bus from Oaxaca City is Monte Albán, a Zapotec site that dates as far back as +/- 500 B.C.. The site sits on top of a mountain with commanding views and signs of extensive terraced farming.
