Mayan Riviera Growth

The development of the Mayan Riviera, of course has its bennifits and drawbacks. The building of enormous all-inclusive resorts has created employment for construction, hotel, and restaurant workers. This part of Mexico is starting to look like a mixture of Las Vegas and the Italian riviera.

This was a 5 star time-share consturction project down town we visited. Only $500k for a one bedroom if you want to buy.

One can now do up-scale shopping in this little beach town and finish it off with a gelato or a grande latte at Starbucks.

Ofcourse Wallmart is there to keep prices down as well as to bring overwhelming competition for all the small clothing shops, food stores,... even the tortilla makers.

Don't worry, you can still get some things for free in the Yucatan. This store doesn't want any to park on this side. The sign indicates: No parking 24 hours a day. Tires puctured for free.

Playa Del Carmen

Jason had his spring break from classes and we found some very cheap tickets to Mexico, so we went to Playa Del Carmen, south of Cancun for a week. It was a nice break from the snow, and we were happy to soak up some tropical sunshine. We did not take that many pictures on this trip. We were in the Yucatan for three weeks in 2007 and did a bit of exploring and pyramid sites on that trip. This was a quick, simple beach and dive trip. Significantly less built up than Cancun (Vegas by the Sea I like to call it), Playa Del Carmen is a more of a cosmopolitan smaller resort.

These three wheeled bikes are wonderful people-powered haulers of goods, people, even construction materials. They can also be ridden in areas that have been closed to automobiles.

This madona was beside our table in a simple seafood restaurant.

A trip to Mexico is not complete without a vist to a "panaderia"

Blue skies, white sands and clear ocean.

fun with snowmobiles

Jason and Kari were lucky enough a few weeks back to join one of Kari's friends from college at his parents cabin in the woods to do some snowmobiling.

Loki wanted to join us for the rides but couldn't keep up in the deep snow, so he had to stay at the cabin.
