Day 15 08 September 2010 Wednesday
Day 16 09 September 2010 Thurseday
Day 17 10 September 2010 Friday
After making a quick escape from Oludeniz on Wednesday, we found another location that was more to our liking. Patara is a Roman site 1 km inland from a huge sandy beach with dunes, and 1.5 km from a village (Gelemis) which has plenty of pensions and restaurants, but a much quieter atmosphere, the perfect place to wait out the busy holiday after the end of Ramadan.
The ancient city had a harbor which silted up in the middle ages, thus, cutting it off from the sea, and strangling its economy.
The deep white sand beach with warm water and gentle waves extends 18 km. The combination of attractions would surely have made this another huge package tourist development site in the 90’s if it were not for one little thing. Patara Beach also happens to be right in the middle of one of the last eastern mediterranean nesting sites for Loggerhead sea turtles! Since the turtles won’t nest if disturbed, and the hatchlings become confused by excessive artificial light, most of the large development was halted by order of the state. Also the nesting beach is simply closed at night. Sun worshipers are welcome to use it during the day. Sorry Emily we haven't seen any of them yet.
